Sword, Redux

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

Here is a quick 5-minute revenge against the first sword I did (see the March entry). This one was so much easier because I knew the style I wanted — not realisticness, but the thick-line magic-marker style that I find coming out in most of the things I’m creating.

Mostly, this is a throwback-homage to all the video games I used to play in the vein of Dragon Warrior, Zelda, and Diablo.

Circle Garden

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

Well, sort of. A “circle tree,” mostly. I love the idea of making a single “base” (of stones in a circle) in which I can put various different types of trees.

This one began with me spending 20-30 minutes creating a single brick, which turned out being the brick I used for most all of the stones in the circle (it got tricky when it came to rotating and such).  The tree and leaves I just threw together — didn’t bother with much detail there.  This was more to get the idea out there.

I realize for my next attempt at this image, I’m gonna try just a 2-D approach… that is, I’m not gonna worry about creating one “3-D” brick and rotating it a bunch of times.  Instead, I’ll create only the visible surfaces of the visible bricks.  You’ll see what I mean!

Some Houses

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

Here are some story-book houses… made these over the course of two nights.  I like the how ivy-covered vines found their way out of my mind… a lot of promise here…

Trees, Trees, Trees

Trees keep popping into my mind.  Gonna keep pumping them out.
Until I find my own style.  And own it!

In Praise of Glory

Here is my third attempt at the trace technique. This probably took 2-3 hours. I tried using some layers for organization… it helped, but I started to get sloppy toward the end (which nearly defeated the entire purpose).

Dancing Queen!

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Here be my baby.  This is my second attempt in the phot-trace technique.  I’m glad to have ventured beyond the limiting realm of my face.  Doing the shading in clothes was quite fun.  I look forward to more…

Desert Mariachi!

Sunday, March 26th, 2006

Wanted to try out creating a landscape with a simple cartoon-like character.  I used to draw this guy in 7th grade all the time.

Face it!

This was my breakthrough illustration. I happened to find a great tutorial online describing a certain method to trace overtop of imported pictures. This took me about 4 hours. A doorway of possibilities has been opened.

Early Attempts

Saturday, March 25th, 2006

Here are a few of the very first things I made. The ideas were screaming out of my mind, I did my best to bring them to life. While it is satisfying to see the results, I know there is a lot of room to grow and improve.

Guitar

Friday, March 24th, 2006

Here is a guitar. Probably took me 1-3 hours? I don’t really remember. This is one of the first things I made. I am quite happy with it… though it is too “real” for my current tastes. Still, it is good to know that I can do stuff like this.
